“The Matchstick Man”,
Welsh boxing phenomenon Johnny Owen, went to Los
Angeles in 1980 to fight for the Bantamweight
World Championship, carrying with him the hopes
and dreams of his hometown, Merthyr Tydfil.
While the men follow Johnny to California to
cheer him on from ringside, the three women in
his life remain in Merthyr, watching the fight
on the telly at the gym where Johnny trained.
As the women breathlessly watch the biggest fight
of Johnny’s career, they also make plans
for their own uncertain futures.
